Overview
Chelmsford Medical Centre has several back, neck, arm and leg pain specialists on site, to offer you an integrated approach to restoring your health. For simple back pain (i.e. your symptoms are fairly recent and you have no additional symptoms), your first step could be an appointment with your GP or a manual therapist. Alternatively, for more complex spinal conditions (i.e. you have additional symptoms or where you've already undertaken manual therapy and it has not been able to restore your health) an appointment with a specialist consultant may be your starting point (see lists below), in which case a referral from your GP is important.

1. For most, a visit to your GP or manual therapist (physiotherapist or osteopath) will be your first step towards restoring your back health.
Manual therapy and acupuncture
Physiotherapists and Osteopaths are both manual therapists whouse slightly different methods but often arrive at similar results. Osteopaths may use more manipulation techniques, whereas physiotherapists may place more emphasis on exercise, but the two specialties overlap so you may wish to use your own personal preference, or recommendations from friends, to choose.

If you have private health insurance, you may need a GP referral letter to claim. Otherwise, if you are paying for the treatment yourself, it is your choice whether you visit your GP or a manual therapist first.
2. For those with more complex symptoms (e.g. pain in the arms or legs), or when manual therapy has not been able to fully correct the problem, you may be referred or choose to go directly to a specialist consultant. These specialist consultants will aim to treat your symptoms with non-invasive methods and only a small number of patients will require surgery.
