Lithotripsy for kidney stones
Stones can develop in any part of the urinary tract; they may lie in the kidney itself, or in the tube (ureter). They start off as tiny grains but grow causing symptoms such as pain, infection and blood in the urine.
Lithotripsy is a non-invasive method by which stones in the kidney are broken down using shock waves to the extent that they may then be passed out in the urine naturally over a period of time
The technique is normally carried out without sedation or anaesthesia. Using either x-ray or ultrasound the stone is visualised, shock waves are then passed harmlessly through the body to target the stone directly, causing it to disintegrate and thus pass from the body via the urine. Depending on the size of the stone it may take a few treatments to eradicate it completely.
The procedure is non- invasive and can be performed as a day case allowing the patient to return home after a short recovery period of approximately two hrs.
