Ultrasound or ultrasonography is a medical imaging technique that uses high frequency sound waves and echoes. This technique is similar to echo-location used by bats, whales and dolphins or the SONAR used by submarines.

Ultrasound imaging is used in a wide variety of clinical specialities including obstetrics and gynaecology, cardiology, vascular medicine, orthopaedics and sports medicine and in the detection of cancer. Ultrasound is also used by doctors to guide them when they are performing a biopsy to enable them to sample tissues with extreme accuracy.
