An X-Ray takes pictures of structures inside the body using a type of radiation energy. X-Rays are like light and radio waves, a form of electromagnetic radiation. They have high energy and short wavelength and are therefore able to pass through tissues. Denser tissues such as bone, block more of the x-rays than less dense tissues such as the lungs.

Simple x-ray images can be extremely informative. They can show if a bone is broken or if there is a shadow on the lung, for example. By injecting contrast dye, specialist x-ray techniques can also be used to investigate other problems with soft tissues of the body.
